In his book, “Zakha'er Al-Uqba fe Manaqeb Zawi Al-Qurba” (The Lasting Reserve in the Virtues of the Kinship), Al-Tabari said: The Prophet (the Prayers and Peace of Allah be upon Him) had twelve uncles; those are the sons of Abdulmutaleb, while his father was his 13 th son. Those are:
Al-Hareth, Abu Taleb (his name was Abdimanaf), Al-Zubaier (also called Abi Al-Hareth), Hamza , Abu Lahab (his name was AbulUzzaa), Al-Ghaidaq, Al-Muqawam, Dirar, Al-Abbas , Qatham, Abdulka'ba, and Hajal (also called Al-Mughera).
His Aunts, the daughters of Abdulmutaleb, were six. Those are: Atika , Umaima, Um-Hakim (also called Al-Baida'), Barra, Safeyya , and Arwa . Abdulmutaleb had his sons and daughters from six marriages. The full brothers and sisters were mentioned in the book of Ibn Arabi “Muhagaret Al-Abrar wa Musamarat Al-Akhiar” (The Attending of the Faithful and the Conversation with the Good People) as follow:
- Al-Abbas and Dirar were full brothers from Abdulmutaleb. Their mother was Nabila / daughter of / Habbab bi Kulaib bin Rabe'a bin Nizar. She was the first Arabic woman to cover Al-Ka'ba with silk and garments.
- Hamza, Al-Muqawam, Hajal, and Safeyya were full brothers and sisters from Abdulmutaleb. Their mother was Hala / daughter of / Uhaib bin Abdimanaf.
- Al-Zubair, Abu Taleb, Abdullah / the Prophet's (the Prayers and Peace of Allah be upon Him) father, Atika, Um-Hakim, Burra, and Arwa were full brothers and sisters from Abdulmutaleb. Their mother is the Prophet's (the Prayers and Peace of Allah be upon Him) grandmother. Her name was Fatima / daughter of / Amr bin Abed bin Umran bin Makhzoom bin Nuqta bin Murra bin Ka'eb.
- Al-Hareth had no full brothers or sisters. His mother was Samra' / daughter of / Jundub bin Hujair bin Hawazen.
- Abu Lahab had no full brothers or sisters. His mother was Lubna / daughter / of Hajar bi Abdimanaf Al-Kuza'eia.
It is true that all his uncles and aunts, except Abu Lahab, were believers and Muslims. Some of them were known in joining the Prophet (the Prayers and Peace of Allah be upon Him) in Jihad such as, Hamza, Al-Abbas, and Al-Sayeda Safeyya. Some of them were infamous (Allah blessed them).
In his book, “Ad-Dur Al-Manthour fe Al-Tafseer bel-Ma'thour” (The Scattered Pearls in Explaining in accordance to the Transmitted) Al-Imam Jalal Ed-Deen Al-Sayouti said that the Arabs had acknowledged the preference of the sons of Abdulmutaleb and they mentioned them in their poems:
Lay down, for us, a true religion as you are
our aim and by your forelock we become right-guided
